he Rockford Public Schools proudly supports an award winning band program. Beginning in middle school, students are introduced to instrumental music participating in 6th grade band followed by Concert Band in 7th grade and Symphonic Band in 8th grade. Rockford has two high-achieving middle school programs at East Rockford Middle School (ERMS) and North Rockford Middle School (NRMS).
The Rockford High School Band Program offers 3 levels of concert band to further musicianship throughout high school beginning with Orange or Black Band offered to grades 9-12. The main focus of this ensemble is to introduce marching techniques and preparation for musicianship required for high school bands. 10-12 grade students audition to be placed in either Wind Symphony or Wind Ensemble. Students in Wind Symphony perform intermediate literature and study of theory, rhythm, and technical facility. Wind Ensemble is comprised of accomplished musicians that study and perform advanced compositions. It is the most traveled and performed band at the high school.
Band students have the opportunity to perform at local concerts, attend district and state band festivals and can participate in small ensembles or as soloists. All students are encouraged to take private lessons. The weekly 30-minute lesson in a one-on-one setting will greatly improve your student’s success in class.2
